The Night of A Thousand Openings

Okay, so not quite a thousand. But so many galleries that I couldn't possibly see them all. I was able to make it to about 10. It was a very eye-opening experience. Before tonight, I had never set foot in any of these galleries. I had mainly experienced art in academic or museum settings. I must admit, I was impressed with what I saw, though I know I barely scratched the surface of what the city has to offer. And before I go to bed I want to post a few things that caught my eye this evening:

Thomas Schmidt
Sampled Spaces, 2009
cast porcelain
Variable dimensions
Individual panels are 14.5" each

Dubhe CarreƱo Gallery
118 N. Peoria St. 2nd Floor
Chicago, IL 60607

Alicia LaChance
Stars Fell | 36 x 48 inches | fresco/oil on canvas on panel

Melanee Cooper Gallery
740 North Franklin
Chicago, Illinois 60654

Vivan Sundaram
Master Plan
Walsh Gallery
118 N. Peoria Street, 2nd Floor
Chicago, IL 60607

After seeing all this, I made one more stop. I was actually on the way back to where I parked when a guy who must have overheard me and my friend discussing the galleries we'd visited suggested we stop by the Nicole Gallery. And I am so glad we did. They had an incredible show. The metal framing the artwork you are about to see is the eye of a sewing needle.

Willard Wigan
Mad Hatters Tea Party

Nicole Gallery
230 W. Huron
Chicago, IL 60654

I am so glad I made that last stop before calling it a night. I really enjoyed my first foray into the Chicago gallery districts and can't wait to go gallery hopping again. I think I'm hooked.
