This was my first time back at The Inspired Home Show (formerly known as The International Housewares Show) since the pandemic began. This trade show was actually the first one I had wanted to attend in 2020 that ended up getting canceled.
One of the highlights of the show for me has always been seeing the new color trends for the year and how Pantone puts their displays together.
The theme for the year is The Art of Living. The color of the year is Viva Magenta.
I always enjoy it when the color of the year is a color I like.
I got to find out more about how Pantone arrived at their decision in a
presentation given by the Executive Director, Lee Eiseman. She talked about how the upheaval of the past few years has resulted in a cultural shift toward seeking relief, renewed optimism, and rejuvenation. Viva Magenta is inspired by the colors of a beetle shell, and the insect is symbolic of resilience and emerging, and the color also references the dyes that have been made from insects. I appreciate getting the context for their color choice and have been thinking about making some new artwork in that color this year.
One thing the show is always good for is a spectacle. This year,
Dash made a statement with seating that looks like a gigantic version of one of their tiny little waffle irons, with two throw pillows that look like pats of butter.
It would have fit right in with the larger-than-life stand mixer that Kitchen-Aid had on display to celebrate the product's anniversary
a few years ago.
As far as appliances and gadgets are concerned, one of the most prevalent new additions that I saw were HVAC-related. Air purifiers, dehumidifiers, humidifiers, and fans were everywhere. I think that the pandemic has a lot of us thinking about indoor air quality in ways we hadn't considered before. Not enough of us, but some of us.
Here are some of the new products that I liked:
It was nice to be back, although familiarly bittersweet when I consider the waiver that I once again had to sign acknowledging that COVID is in the air and I risked catching it while being at the show, while at the same time there was no mask policy. It was unnerving to be in a sea of unmasked faces. And that's why I don't go out much anymore. Anyway, I hope that things will be better next year and look forward to seeing what's new.
