The 2025 Inspired Home Show

This year The Inspired Home Show reached a big milestone this year: it was the 125th show.

As always, this is where I got to see the new Pantone color schemes.

Mocha Mousse is the new Color of the Year.

I have to admit that when I first saw Mocha Mousse last year, I wasn't impressed with it. An artist I follow said that the color looked like dirty mop water, and she was right, because the first look we got was not a good photo. The version we saw in articles of the image in the slide below was not color-corrected. It looked dull and desaturated.

Sorry it's blurry, but at least the color is right.

After seeing the color in person, I made sure to adjust the photo that I took of the slide so that it could reflect the true hue of Mocha Mousse. It's not a bad shade of brown, though I still think it connotes austerity. A darker, richer brown would evoke a sense of luxury, like dark chocolate, antique wood furniture, expensive liquor, and imported cigars. Still, I liked the way Mocha Mousse looks with this nail polish that I made with old eyeshadow.

As always, it was interesting to hear Leatrice Eiseman's rationale for choosing the color of the year, as well as the other palettes for 2025. The overarching theme was looking to the past in times of uncertainty. She shared photos from the 1940s through the 1990s that inspired her. What stood out to me was the image of a president's aesthetic in the presentation: Ronald Reagan, Hollywood cowboy. I'm pretty sure that inspired the Modern West color scheme.

Here are the other Pantone color palettes for 2025.

What stands out for me about this year's Inspired Home Show is how purposeful the new products are. For years, I'd been seeing weird gadgets that seemed destined to end up as clutter in a junk drawer, solutions in search of a problem. It was nice to see things that were thoughtfully designed and useful. Here are a few of my favorites.

Le Creuset

Samuel Groves

Carote

Imusa

Whirley-Pop

The Dash booth was cute as always. The mini waffle irons are back, now with Snoopy and Charlie Brown.

I've been interested in learning about cake decorating for a long time, and I enjoyed watching a demonstration in the Wilton booth.

The Pantone presentation was my first stop at the show, and I kept reflecting on what Leatrice Eisman said about the importance of home as I met vendors who had come to Chicago from their homes in faraway places, including Singapore, Australia, China, Canada, and the UK. Would they want to return next year after hearing all the cruel, jingoistic nonsense that the current regime espouses? Will tariffs curtail the home goods industry? And how will I get more clients if younger people never get a chance to own their own homes? Uncertainty abounds, but if there's still a show next year, I plan to be there.
